How to Design Your Own Double-Weave Potholders with the Desmos Potholder Design Genie with Julie Hue

I am delighted to welcome guest teacher Julie Hue to join me for a brand new online  workshop on how to use the program Desmos to create your own double-weave design.  Desmos makes everything easy, and we won't be doing any math.

This is the ideal class for those who want to experiment more with their weaving work but who like having instructions to follow while they weave. It's also perfect for those who perhaps struggle to visualize their design ideas and want to see how a finished piece might look before starting out.

In this two hour class, you won't be weaving, but instead you’ll learn how to use the software to create a double-weave design. Desmos will help you to:

  • Create a double-weave design from scratch
  • Create a design from an image
  • Change the loop colors
  • See your design with a clasped warp or weft (or both!)
  • Get row-by-row weaving instructions
  • Adjust the settings so the chart looks its best on your device
  • NOTE: This program creates whole-loop designs. It doesn't deal with split loops since few double-weave patterns need those.

Julie notes:

"I love getting requests for charts. Some people want to try colors, and some want weaving instructions. Whatever the need, it’s always a joy to help a fellow weaver.

I shared my first programs so people could try colors in a variety of patterns. I thought it would end there, but then some people said they can’t read charts. That put me on a mission to make every pattern weaveable for them, so I added weaving instructions to the programs.

Learning Desmos has been a fun adventure for me, but it has been truly rewarding to hear people’s stories and see the potholders that Desmos made possible for them."

We hope you can join us for this helpful class to take your work to the next level.

The workshop will take place via Zoom on Saturday, April 25th 2025, 10am-12pm (PT) / 1-3pm (ET).

Cost per attendee: $50*

To take part in this class you'll need:
  • A large-screen device such as a tablet or laptop. You’ll use it to practice using the Potholder Design Genie.
  • A second device or the ability to split the screen or use a second tab. You’ll use it to watch what Julie does. If you use a phone, one with a large screen would be nice.
  • A mouse, trackpad, or stylus, especially if your screen isn’t very big
  • Fully charged batteries in both devices, with charging cables nearby, because you'll be on both devices for the full two hours.
The class will be held online via Zoom and we very much look forward to seeing you April 25th.  Details of how to access the workshop will be sent closer to the date.

If you aren't able to join the live workshop, don't forget that a recording of the class will also be provided after the event by email, for all paying attendees for you to watch at your leisure. This recording will also be available to purchase in the Workshop Recordings section of my website after the event.
