Originally recorded at the Weaving Way Community meeting in May 2025, we heard from Cathy Wilkerson and Mark Hoesly of the Indigo Squirrel, in conversation with Kate Kilmurray.
With its genesis in a gang of self-identified textile geeks who would gather around a five-gallon bucket in Cathy and Mark's back yard, the Indigo Squirrel has evolved to teaching crafters how to dye fabrics with this evocative shade at some of the premier venues and arts destinations in New England; including at Boston Design Week, Harvard University and the Fuller Craft Museum.
A graduate of and a teacher at the Rhode Island School of Design, Cathy has been a buyer and merchandiser in the home furnishings industry for over three decades, developing products with manufacturers across the world. Together with Mark, she told us how she became interested (and then obsessed) with indigo, and how her passion with the oxidation process evolved into a business. It was a fascinating talk, useful for anyone with a love for this beautiful blue color, or indeed those thinking of turning their craft into a business.
